Inter-and intra-individual differences in skin hydration and surface lipids measured with mid-infrared spectroscopy

چکیده
Skin health is characterized by heterogeneous system of water and lipids in upper layers providing protection from external environment and preventing loss of vital components of the body. Skin hydration (moisture) and sebum (skin surface lipids) are considered to be important factors in skin health; a right balance between these components is an indication of healthy skin and plays a central role in protecting and preserving skin integrity. In this manuscript we present interand intra-individual variation in skin hydration and surface lipids measured with a home-built experimental prototype based on infrared spectroscopy. Results show good agreement with measurements performed by commercially available instruments Corneometer and Sebumeter used for skin hydration and sebum measurements respectively.

Intra-individual Variation in Cuticular Lipids Studied Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy
We report here a method for studying phase transitions in cuticular lipids of insects. This technique, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), is more sensitive than previous biophysical methods and is applicable to either lipid extracts or lipids in situ (in cast skins or intact wings). We used FTIR to compare biophysical properties of cuticular lipids in different regions of individua...
متن کاملHydration-Induced Deformation of Lipid Aggregates before and after Polymerization
The dimensions of multibilayer stacks of lipids with terminal diene groups were studied before and after polymerization at variable hydration by means of X-ray diffraction, gravimetry, and infrared spectroscopy. The short-range hydration force acting between the bilayers of lipids with phosphatidylcholine and -ethanolamine headgroups is not affected by lipid polymerization. Consequently, contri...

Skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system with multiples important functions. Due to its complex structure, the permeability skin status can be modified by different external and internal factors such as chemical and physical stresses, and several skin and systemic diseases. Today, different non-invasive methods are used to assess the skin barrier biophysical properties. The paramet...
متن کاملIn vivo determination of intra-myocellular lipids in human muscle by means of localized 1H-MR-spectroscopy.
Intra-myocellular lipids (IMCL) are stored in droplets in the cytoplasm of muscle cells and are an energy storage form readily accessed during long-term exercise. 1H-MR spectroscopy methods are presented for noninvasive determination of IMCL in human muscle. This is based on (a) the separation of two resonances in the lipid-CH2-region, with the one assigned to IMCL being independent of muscle o...
متن کاملHydration of single-stranded phosphodiester and phosphorothioate oligodeoxyribonucleotides.
Infrared spectroscopy was used to identify hydration-sensitive structural differences between single- stranded phosphorothioate (PS) and phosphodiester (PO) oligodeoxyribonucleotides. Spectra were recorded in the mid-infrared region, 500-1800 cm-1, at relative humidities between 0 and 98%; the PS and PO spectra are substantially different. The hydration effects on spectral bands in these single...
